When The Dominoes Begin To Fall
The most common theory used as reason to conduct the various military conflicts during the Cold War is as applicable to the current War on Terror as it ever was in the fifty year stare-down between the West and the Soviet Union. The ‘Domino’ theory, which states that once one country falls to communism it will spread to neighboring countries and so on, is most certainly in play when it comes to the Middle East and Islamofascism.
Speaking of Pakistan…
The painfully forced smile on the face of President Pervez Musharraf was hard to watch as he fulfilled his promise to the West and to his political opponents to ‘take off the uniform’. Whether or not this will do anything to quell the huge tide of pro-radical Islamism in Pakistan is debatable. What we do know is that Pakistan is to the Afghanistan battle what Iran is to Iraq – a pest of a neighbor who claims innocence in public while taking financial and political advantage in supporting terrorism. With the country teetering ever closer to internal collapse, the U.S. should be ready to deal with a new battleground on the terror war inside Pakistani territory.
The rise of anti-Americanism added to recent suicide bomb attacks (on a nuclear facility, yet) are most definitely red flags that cannot be ignored. While the media and the anti-war left sing the praises of the latest intelligence release on Iran, Pakistan sinks deeper and deeper into uncertainty.
Meanwhile, over in Iran…
President Nutjob is sharing the same speechwriter as anti-war Democrats, calling the report stating that the Iran nuclear program is all but void ‘vindication’. Perfect! Thank God that’s over with. Here we thought that Iran was a dangerous country run by a religious fanatical bent on antagonizing the West into a military conflict. Now if only they could explain why Iran is supplying weapons and cash to terrorist insurgents in Iraq I’d really be able to sleep well at night. If anything, it sounds like the anti-war crowd and the anti-Bush Democrats ought to give the President a big atta-boy for obviously improving America’s intelligence complex. After all, this is the same crack team that ignored the obvious warnings and chatter indicating that some scumbags were going to highjack some airplanes on or around September 11, 2001. And hey, didn't they once say something about WMDs in Iraq...? Good thing their credibility is solid enough to take their word for it regarding Iran.
The focus on fighting terrorism must break free of the influence of ideological persuasion. As important as a successful result in Iraq is, it is just one part of the overall battle against a widespread and lethal enemy. We must be willing to confront that enemy wherever it may lurk, even if that means ruffling the feathers of a few ‘allies’.
