Strange Days, Indeed

Am I the only one who has noticed a string of weird occurrences taking place lately? It seems that we are experiencing some sort of flip in the universe given some of the bizarre realities of today. In fact, I am becoming more and more convinced that Hell has indeed frozen over. I keep looking skyward for those expected soaring sows.

Just imagine if the 2001 edition of you was suddenly beamed into 2007. Would any of this be believable?

First, Canada’s P.M. Scary Stephen Harper has convinced people that his much-feared ‘Hidden Agenda’ contains such frightening ideas as lower taxes, strong national defense, toughening our crime laws, and common sense towards the environment. For the first time in a long time, Canadians are actually warming to the idea of a Conservative majority.

How about the value of the dollar? For the first time in a half-century, the Canadian loonie is worth more than the U.S. greenback. I guess we know who is whose bitch now! If it wasn’t for America’s massive military, truer democracy, their successful ‘melting pot’ instead of our flawed ‘multi-culturalism’, and their freer market system, we’d have them right where we want them.

What the hell is with Russia? From Gorbachev to Yeltsin, the Nation Formerly Known as the Soviet Union made progress from communism to free market capitalism and democracy. With current leader and former KGB-man Vlad Putin sounding (and, given the mysterious deaths of those who oppose him, acting) like Stalin, the previously shunned idea of a renewed Cold War with Russia is becoming more believable.

Before 9/11, we had some suspicions about how effective the United Nations really was. Now, with a litany of errors and comedy sideshows, the U.N. has lived up to its initials. It has been hijacked by leftwing ideologists and has become little more than a public stage for the rantings of madmen like Hugo Chavez. The U.S. not only should end their part of the financial support of the organization, they should request its removal from American soil.

Has anyone noticed that it is much safer in Iraq now than before the much-maligned troop surge? Could the Americans actually be ‘winning’ the war? Who would have guessed that one?

Back in 2001 would you have believed that Al Gore would be the focus of the greatest con job on the American public in years with his return as ‘Captain Environment’, becoming an award-winning messiah of the American far leftwing? (Btw: can anyone tell me what the Nobel Peace Prize has to do with the environment?)

The Believe-It-Or-Not’s are endless: maybe a Mormon in the White House? The greatest example of an enabling wife in history leading in the race to become president? Canada with an actual, modern, strong Armed Forces?

Who knows what other bizarre twists are in store for us. Perhaps something really crazy like democracy in Afghanistan?
