Remember years and years ago, when you were in school? Remember having to wear your itchy ‘Good’ clothes, gather with your similarly dressed classmates, stand in front of your beaming parents, and sing Christmas carols?
Remember when you were allowed to sing Christmas carols?
My eyes opened a few years ago when I attended my daughters’ school Christmas concert. This event occurs at public schools throughout the free world, and has done unimpeded for decades. Not that time.
Any reference to ‘Christmas’ was glaringly absent. When the curtains first opened, I was met with a large, sparkling-silver sign hanging on the back wall of the gymnasium stage: PEACE. My reaction, admittedly, was anything but Christian. What the Hell…?
The event slipped quickly from bad to horrible when the first group of singers began their rendition of that all-time Christmas favorite, Imagine by John Lennon. Seriously. I’m not joking.
The follow-up ‘All You Need Is Love’, with the interspersed tear-jerking speeches by our young about the need for global hand-holding capped the transition of the evening from Christmas concert to Beatlemania. I still don’t know what set me off the most: the disbelief that other parents seemed perfectly fine with this or the frustration that you still had to put on a brave face because it is, after all, your children up their performing for you.
The politically-correct education agenda isn’t limited to the Holidays, however. Just last year, popular Canadian leftwing environazi David Suzuki made news when he accepted an invitation to speak at a Calgary elementary school. His speech, intended to be about his specialty, namely the environment, quickly turned into an anti-Harper government spiel. Apparently, the Calgary Board of Education prescribes to the theory: If you want to sway the masses, get ‘em while they’re young.
Over and over, parents are drilled with the messages of taking an interest in your kid’s lives. Be aware of their internet use! Are they using drugs? Are they having sex? Now, on top of it all, we need to look closer at the place our children are being taught.
We don’t need to take our education system back in time to the 1950’s. We just need to get back to the basics. Teach the kids what they need to learn – math, language, science. The 3 ‘r’s. Perhaps even how to balance a bank account.
Leave to leftwing propaganda out.
